Welcome to the latest Dog Lover's Newsletter.

If you would like to read previous issues of my Dog Obedience Newsletters, for dog owners and dog lovers everywhere, please go here

If you fancy exploring this site further, then go to the resources page which you can find here where you will find links to all sorts of valuable information, such as articles, my blog, charities and much more.  If you refer others to this site, which you can do from that resources page, I will send you a FREE Screen Saver with beautiful pictures of dogs from my readership.

I want to build a second screen saver with pictures of YOUR dog(s).  So why not send me a picture with some short details about your dog (its' name, where it lives, any story about how you acquired him or her and what made you chose them etc.).  All I ask is that you add the words "there are no usage restrictions with these photographs", so I know there are no copyright issues to contend with.  Send your details to me at info@trainingdogsrus.com

Many of you have sent in your pictures, but to make the screen saver more beautiful and rich it would help to have some more.  REMEMBER, all those who send in their photographs will get a copy of the new screen saver completely free of charge, which will contain your pictures within it of course!

Now for this week's tips and advice

Heart Worm

What is it and how do you prevent it harming your dog?

Ever heard of heart worm? Well I must say that its not commonly know unless you are a breeder or have had lots of dogs, so you might be interested to know what it is. Heartworms are a parasitic worm (about the diameter of thin spaghetti) that normally live free floating in the right ventricle of the heart and nearby blood vessels. The parasites are transmitted from one individual to another by mosquitoes.

The common questions about heart worm are often related to the species affected by heart worms because it doesn’t just affect dogs. It can also affect, the cat, fox, wolf, horse and believe it or not, sea lions! And all of them can be successfully treated for it with drugs, but it wont go away on its own, so if you think your pet may be affected you must take it to the Vet asap.

A drug called Ivermectin is the drug used often to prevent these heart worms. Dogs affected reveal constant coughing, panting and dullness quite frequently, although not perhaps constantly. So look out for these symptoms.

The next thing you need to know is what they look like. In the case of the female worm, it is about twenty-seven centimeters and in the case of males, it is about seventeen centimeters in length. And its those pesky mosquitoes that carry them. If they bite the animal the infection is spread.

Also to note is that the treatment meant is also effective for hook worms, whip worms, and round worms.

These mosquitoes are widespread but not so bad in colder months when they are not breeding.

Can You prevent it?

The answer is yes if you take the following action.

On the basis that prevention is better than cure you can feed your dog tablets or solutions that will guard against heart worms. Beef flavored chunks are available in addition to the beef flavored tablets or solutions that can be given orally to the dogs as protection against heart worms. You should also avoid mosquito bites by providing proper mosquito-proof shelter facilities for the dogs.

You will need to consider whether you need to take these protection measures all through out the year and this will depend upon where you live. If you live where the mosquitoes are dormant in colder months then you need not treat the dog, however always read the instructions on the medication carefully and follow them to the letter.
