Welcome to the latest Dog Lover's Newsletter.

If you would like to read previous issues of my Dog Obedience Newsletters, for dog owners and dog lovers everywhere, please go here

If you fancy exploring this site further, then go to the resources page which you can find here where you will find links to all sorts of valuable information, such as articles, my blog, charities and much more.  If you refer others to this site, which you can do from that resources page, I will send you a FREE Screen Saver with beautiful pictures of dogs from my readership.

I want to build a second screen saver with pictures of YOUR dog(s).  So why not send me a picture with some short details about your dog (its' name, where it lives, any story about how you acquired him or her and what made you chose them etc.).  All I ask is that you add the words "there are no usage restrictions with these photographs", so I know there are no copyright issues to contend with.  Send your details to me at info@trainingdogsrus.com

Many of you have sent in your pictures, but to make the screen saver more beautiful and rich it would help to have some more.  REMEMBER, all those who send in their photographs will get a copy of the new screen saver completely free of charge, which will contain your pictures within it of course!

Now for this week's tips and advice

Pet Identification

No one expects to ever be separated from their pets but there is much proof that it happens, and in so many different ways. If it's happened to others, it can happen to you and your pet. In order to plan an effective identification program for your pets, you'll find it helpful to understand how pets become, and stay, separated from their owners and families. What's more, this understanding will help your household establish many more practices to help safeguard your pets against separation, such as those suggested here.

So first lets look at what induces in companion animals even the thought of leaving their owners? Is it always the pet's choice to leave? If you're feeling confident that your pet will never have a reason to be separated from you, realize now that ALL PETS can, at some time in their lives, will find themselves in a position to run away or be taken from you. I’ve seen 3 main ways to categorize reasons why they may become separated from you:

1. Adventure-seeking roaming, a product of such factors as

• Natural curiosity about the unknown, or about that dog, cat or squirrel (particularly its scent): the best ways to reduce the instance of dogs actually acting on their curiosity is socialization and basic obedience training.
• Boredom: if a pet spends its days alone and isolated, doesn't it have more reason to seek adventure than one with a more "full life"? The Humane Society has some tips for home alone dogs in 9-5 households if you’d like to look up their site
• Mating urges in un-neutered males: Neutering your male dog should eliminate this influence to roam
• Search for a better life: If humans run away from lives of abuse and neglect, isn't it possible that abused and neglected pets might run away, too?

2. Fear-Induced Flight, due to such specific causes as

• frightening sights & sounds like thunderstorms, fireworks and many other types of loud, scary noises
• Confusion, once lost as a result of roaming
• Auto (and other) accidents

3. Pet Theft - and yes, it can happen to you.

The ways of dealing with the above fall into 2 main categories:
• Proper physical restraint
• And, pet identification measures.

Physical restraint applies to the physical area that you keep the dog in (home, yard etc) whilst you are not with him, plus the means by which you restrain him when you are with him, for example his leash.

I’m not going to cover restraining your animal in a physical locality such as your yard, because I believe that this is obvious to us all. If you have a young fit and agile dog that you know can jump, then a 4 ft fence just wont stop them will it! Always check your whole yard for places he can escape and take the proper precautions. The same goes if he can easily get out of your home or if he is prone to squeeze past you whenever you open a door to the outside.

So making sure that your dog has the correct leash is very important too. As is restraining him correctly when he’s in the car. A proper dog seatbelt or harness will prevent him form escaping if you have a car accident. A dog traveling in a car should always be restrained.

What really counts for me is proper pet ID, so that in the event the worst happens then there is at least a chance of him being recognized or traced via his ID.

Pet identification is especially required in these days because of the need for the licensing of the dog in a proper manner and to reduce the numbers of stray dogs on the streets. Pet identification is done by many methods, which are different from each other. The cost of each is also a factor to be considered for some.

The identification of your pet may be done by personalized tags, some times by the municipal license tag, rabies tag, and more. Most of the time, your telephone number and your name will be on a place in the personalized tags of the dogs. If any body encounters the dog accidentally they will be able to report its whereabouts to either you or the appropriate officials.

Plastic and metal pet identification tags are available in multiple colors and the dog owners can choose the color they want. However, many select the reflective type of dog tags along with the collars. Hence, the dogs can be identified even in darkness.

Nowadays, many electronic gadgets are available like microchips which are embedded into the dog. These electronic chips are implanted by the vet behind the ears in the scruff of the neck and once implanted stay in place permanently. This microchip will record a number that is registered on a computerized system which then records the pet owners name and ID details (and usually the vets details) so that the owner can then be contacted. A collared and tagged animal makes an indication that it is not a stray animal and this gives more security to the dog.

Micro chipping your dog is more expensive but its more foolproof – especially if the dog has been lost for a while and has managed to slip its collar. Its also very handy if a less than honest person has stolen your dog and removed the collar. Should you ever be lucky enough to find the dog then this chip will prove that the dog is yours. The computer system is shared by all Vets so if a way of identifying a dog even when they have traveled a great distance from home.

Fortunately for the dogs, the older traditional form of identification of the animal by tattooing is now very rare in dogs.
